ESTACADA

ESTACADA

Estacada is a place that is untamed, and it has a rich history. It is not unflawed, but it is great. It's one of those towns in the Willamette valley that is unforgettable. It is surrounded by amazing natural beauty. If you walk the main street, you see the amazingly rich history of the place. It has always had a deep connection with Portland. In the early 1900s, a trolley line ran down to Estacada and attracted a lot of tourists to the area. The town grew and became a great cultural hub. Walking through the main part of the town, it kind of seems formulaic in its presentation. But as you look closer into this town's businesses and restaurants, as well as talk to some of the people, you see that it has a wild spirit, and lives in those times of cruising around and the small towns that used to be.

The reason I say it is untamed is that it hasn't really been discovered by the tourist yet. It has yet to be dumbed down by the casual observer or the overbearing tourist. I don't see it as dull, in fact when I ate at Lew's Drive In, I found out that it was anything but. When you're outside the diner, you don't get the real sense of the place. Once you walk in though, you're greeted by a shelves of model cars and a '50s style diner that looks like the inside of a race car. There are so many little elements of the place that tie it together. It offers the traditional menu, with a lot of things to chose from, and the staff are very kind. There are pictures on the wall highlighting the great days in Estacada's past.

I imagine that if I lived in Estacada, I would have a lot of pride, for this little pocket of tightly packed streets and buildings I would call home. This place is on the conservative side of the spectrum, but that doesn't mean they're loud about it. You get that sense from the place, but their not shouting it from the rooftops.

In conclusion, I feel like this is a place that everyone can enjoy, why? Because Estacada is what it is, and it's not afraid. It may have a great crime rate, but it's what 3500 call home and I respect it.

  1. Cool history info. A very even-handed review. However, you neglected to mention that the chili dog at Lew's was once made illegal because it is so addictive. #MAGA
