OREGON CITY(THE SUBURBS)

OREGON CITY(THE SUBURBS)
Oregon city, is now emerging as more than just a boring suburb, it's emerging as a hip suburb, over the next month, I will be covering Oregon's biggest cities and centers of culture as well as some of Portland's suburbs. Oregon city is really cool. It is one of the most historic places in Oregon, being the first proper city in the state and the end of the Oregon trail. Over the past few decades it has been dismissed as just another suburb of Portland. It used to be a land of pioneers, but it was surrounded by urban development. It's downtown remains historic with many restaurants and interesting shops to go into. It was once the state's capital city, and this leads one to believe that it has declined as a city somewhat. That is not true at all, it has still maintained that historic feel of a gleaming western city. The city is home to Willamette falls, and the Oregon city municipal elevator, a 89-foot ride to get to the upper part of the city. On this little promenade park, you have a stunning view of the city.

There is something about Oregon city that troubles me though, is the vacant industrial district. It doesn't seem like there is anyone working there nowadays and it takes up a large portion of the main part of the city. I far as I know there have been no renewal projects started and so it just sits there untouched. It seems rather like an eyesore as people look out off of the McLoughlin promenade at it, and it is my only real major complaint about the city. It is a recognizable factor for some, but, I just think it's just plain bad.

In conclusion, check out Oregon city, it's really cool and has a rich history for all to enjoy.

  1. So glad you visited Oregon City! It's where I live and I want you know there are MAJOR plans for the Blue Heron Paper Mill that closed in 2011 - it's right on the river and blocks the public from Willamette Falls (it's what you can see from the Promenade - can't wait until it is totally gone). If you google Willamette Falls Legacy Project you will see the first thing that will take place is public access to the Falls (for the first time in 150 years!). It will be called Riverwalk and will encompass nature, history and more. There will be other development too but, as far as I'm concerned, Riverwalk is THE most important thing that will happen! Come on back for a visit!
